Beschreibung

In this photographic documentation, the authors Hans-Ulrich Duwendag and Wolfgang Völker present previously unknown pictures, which were rescued shortly before the outbreak of the civil war in Somalia in 1991 and the destruction of the cathedral of Mogadishu and of the archives of the Franciscan missionaries there. The pictures from the Italian colonial period and from the 80s of the 20th century keep us in mind an African city that was once called “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”. Today, the old town of Mogadishu and almost all of its historical buildings are destroyed. With this book, the city, its people and its surroundings come to life again. The picture pages are extensively labelled in German, English and Italian.
